Ice, rest: Usually the best treatment is ice, rest and nsaids typically after the offending activity which is often basketball in teenagers. I won't let players play if they are limping, but often the pain fades once they warm up and gets exacerbated after running or jumping activities.

RICE: Dr sidler's answer is correct, but i would add a knee brace for support and possibly physical therapy for quadriceps strengthening.
