Milk intolerence: Abdominal cramps, bloating , gas are usually due to milk intolerance. About 20% of people in this country have milk intolerance. Symptoms depend on quantity of milk ingested. About 3% of children have milk allergy. Even small amount of milk can cause or aggravate cough, wheezing, hives, itching, diarrhea etc. Keeping a diary of symptoms can help the diagnosis. Allergy evaluation will be helpful.

Lactose intolerance: Milk problems can be confusing, because you could either have a milk allergy or lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance is an inability to digest lactose (milk sugar) due to deficiency of lactase (enzyme to digest lactose) which leads to cramping, gas and diarrhea. Allergy to milk is due to making ige antibody to milk - exposure to milk proteins (not lactose) cause hives, cramps, diarrhea, etc.
