A member asked:

Brazilian nuts are radioactive.. are they safe to eat/touch? should you wash your hands after touching them? would radioactivity stay on clothes?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Safe.: Almost everything in the environment is radioactive to some extent and cosmic rays pass through us all day every day. However radium decay emits alpha, beta and gamma radiation which is more damaging than most other household radioactive sources. Also, radium is stored in bones - very near the bone marrow. Brazil nuts are safe - levels are very low - but I would not eat them exclusively.
