I'm babysitting a little boy with red swollen sporadic hives all over his body. no other symptoms. what can i do in addition to antihistamines?

Babysitter: This is a mater you need to discuss with the parent of this child. It is not a good idea to give medicine to a child that you are babysitting. If you are at your house and not the normal child's environment, I suggest keeping the child away from pets you might have and calling the parent about foods to avoid. If you have the number to the child's Dr. call for advice.

Other options: This will usually require or more thorough work up. Most times hives in children is related to a recent viral infection. No other treatment beyond antihistamines and time is needed. If hives persist or are accompanied by other symptoms the child should be evaluated by an allergist. If he experiences any problems breathing etc. you should give epinephrine and call 911 immediately.
