Medscape answers: "…etiology of thyroid-related orbitopathy is autoimmune-mediated inflammatory process of orbital tissues, predominantly affecting fat & extraocular muscles. Lymphocytes, plasma, & mast cells are cellular constituents in this process. Deposition of glycosaminoglycans & influx of water increase the orbital contents. Obstrxn of superior ophthalmic vein also contributes to orbital engorgement".
