Sometimes weeks: Hematomas, or blood collections, often develop after falls. Many elderly folks 1) have fragile blood vessels and skin 2) take blood thinners, even aspirin, that increase the bleeding and 3) aren't very active, so the collections aren't 'worked out' over time. It may take weeks for the hematoma to go away. If fever, redness or increased pain start, have her doctor check for late infection.

Hematoma: If you mother's doctor has determined that the hematoma does not need to be drained (aspirated) it can take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months for the body to reabsorb the blood on its own. Continue to follow up with her doctor and be sure to seek care for any increase in size or new symptoms.
