Already airborne: From the first descriptions of Ebola infection (pulmonary hemorrhagic fever), doctors suspected that transmission was via inhalation of airborne droplets. Ebola, then, has ALWAYS been "airborne" - it's the main way that Ebola spreads. What's different this time, I believe, is that the outbreak was not contained (patients were not quarantined well). Ebola, like all viruses, is constantly mutating.

Not airborne: Ebola is transmitted by direct contact. Bats may be carriers, among other animals.

Unlikely: Airborn transmission is a way for viruses to spread without direct contact. These are the strategy of viruses that attack the throat and lungs. The irritation sets up coughing and sneezing which spreads the virus. Ebola spreads by direct contact and does not cause coughing. So its very unlikely that it will evolve into something that behaves this way.
