You should see a doc: If the toe is swollen it could be infected, arthritis, a fracture, all are treated differently. So a good evaluation is in order.

Watered down Gout.: When a toe has your symptoms, with no visible signs or history of injury or infection, I consider a classic sub-clinical gout possibility. The classic signs never really appear, but the toe has a watered down look of gout. Go figure.
