Canker sore.: An aphthous ulcer is also known as a canker sore, often a painful circular lesion inside the mouth. It does not have one specific cause, but it can be brought on by many triggers such as stress, infection, vitamin deficiencies, or immune system abnormalities. Other than being painful, they are harmless and can be treated with topical oral agents.

Canker sores: Aphthous ulcers (canker sores), are small, shallow lesions that develop in your mouth or at the base of your gums. Unlike cold sores, canker sores don't occur on the surface of your lips and aren't contagious. They can be painful, however, and can make eating and talking difficult. Possible causes: citrus fruits (e.g., oranges and lemons), physical trauma, stress, lack of sleep.

Aphthous ulcers: There is no quick cure but using a combination of liquid mylanta and liquid Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and applying a small amount of the combination on the ulcer multiple times a day will cut down on the pain and may help heal it a little quicker.

Prevent trigger: See prior answers relating to these for much more discussion. Each person usually finds that certain things trigger them, e.g. Citrus fruits, lack of sleep, weight loss, iron, vitamin B12 or Folic Acid deficiency, trauma, braces. There are some systemic diseases associated with these: crohn's, behcets, celiac disease. Also think of hot drinks. Oragel topically or antiviral rx early on may help.

Could be both.: Herpes simplex of the mouth is a common cause of painful, recurrent ulcerations, caused by the virus, that stays indolent in the mouths/lips, and then when triggered by a 'cold' or sun or certain foods, etc, becomes an active lesion. Aphthous ulcer is a more general term, which is associated with many different causes, but not one cause.

Nothing really: Unfortunately not much can be done for those pesky buggers. They take about 14 days to run their course. It is counterproductive to try to put anything on them. They need to dry out so to speak. If you get them frequently...your doctor can give you a prescription for Acyclovir. Over the counter methods includes taking Lysine which can be purchased at many stores. Try to avoid spicy or aci
