Yes: The types of bacteria that cause these infections include gram positive, gram negative and anaerobes (Bacteroides, Clostridium). Flagyl helps cover the latter class. Normally not used in isolation, but as an analog to other antibiotics that have better coverage for the first 2 classes of bacteria.

Can be useful: Cholecystitis is an inflammation of the gall bladder. A variety of antibiotics can be used to treat this condition. Flagyl is usually used with a specific bacteria - Bacteroides spp. Flagyl works great with anaerobic bacteria.
