Hiccups: A hiccup is an involuntary, spasm of the diaphragm resulting in sudden inspiration and ends with abrupt closure of the glottis. Diabetes is among the possible causes. You might to have him keep tight Blood sugar control. If persistent (>48 hours and ≤one month) or intractable (>one month) he may need eval by his PCP. His meds could also cause it. Treat the cause and he should get better

Check: liver and kidney function. Make sure his electrolytes are in range. Have his doc go over his med list. NO alcohol ever.
