Depends on symptoms: Most patients with IBS really are chronically constipated. Typically several days of constipation increases the bowel activity until the obstruction is relieved. This is followed by 2-3 days of loose stool until things settle down and the cycle of constipation begins again. In this setting, the treatment is regulation of bowel function by very gradual increase in fiber intake.
