Get a light.: Seasonal affective disorder usually comes on with the shorter days of winter. There are special lights you can buy that will help alleviate this problem with only minutes of use per day. And they're not exhorbitantly expensive. Your friend could consult a psychiatrist or other mental health professional. The diagnosis usually does not require many visits.
