Faulty reading: The most important step to assessing low oxygen is to make sure the pulse oximeter is reading correctly. Pulse oximeters can be effected by nail polish, skin temperature and other things. A common cause of low oxygen is shunting. Sitting for long periods, obesity and shallow breathing due to pain can decrease the amount of lung used for oxygen exchange.
