Do ultrasound techs see prenatal patients for pregnancy ultrasound or does the obgyn normally do them?

Ultrasounds: Ob/gyn's normally will order an ultrasound study, and the ultrasound tech then does the actual scan and gives the results to a radiologists or ob/gyn for interpretation. There are some places where a tech will do an ultrasound, but these are not considered "medical ultrasounds", as there is no interpretation of the results.

It depends: It depends on the setting. In some practices your OB will do your initial ultrasound. Generally, for your detailed anatomy scan around15wks - 20wks gest age, a tech will perform the scan and a radiologist will review the scan and give your OB a report. The tech has special training in this area and is usually very good at scanning.

Both: Most obs do their own early us and growth us, it's part of their training. However, usually they're too busy to do them all or send "nuchal thickness" ultrasounds to credentialed centers. Many also send pts to perinatologists for high resolution exams if there are high risk factors for anomalies. So, it depends on time, equipment, training, certification, and unfortunately, reimbursement.
