What sort of imaging is good to detect tendon injuries, thickness, disease, or degeneration? is ultrasound useful?

US, MRI: Ultrasound (US) is excellent for evaluating tendons, including all the issues that you have mentioned. Depending on the tendon, some can be more difficult to evaluate with US than others based on the individual anatomy. For example, a tendon may curve around a bone which makes the exam more difficult. An MRI can provide exquisite information regarding tendons, and are often more specific than US.

Ultrasound: can be useful, but MRI is probably better.
