Depends: All interventions have some associated risk.In the right setting, this is a necessary part of therapy.If the situation arises that suggests the tube would need to be in to assure fluid balance for weeks or longer, a gastrotomy could be performed with placement of a gastric tube.That would allow access with less nose and throat irritation.That also has potential complications.
