Prematurity: No. A newborn who weighs 3 lbs is generally born about 8-10 weeks early. They often have issues with breathing and temperature regulation but with good care in a NICU they can do quite well. A full term baby who weighs 3 lbs is likely to have significant issues that have caused such a low weight.
