COPD....: The most important way to decrease disease progression is to stop smoking. COPD cannot be cured but symptoms can be managed with bronchodilator and steroid inhalers as well as oxygen therapy if the oxygen levels are low enough to prescribe it. Pulmonary rehab can be sought as this will also help symptoms. The disease is slowly progressive but your friend can live a long life if these are done!

Much to do: First thing is to quit smoking (if he/she does). Not all COPDers need medication- many are OK with a rescue inhaler like asthmatics. Pulmonary rehabilitation (if necessary) and lung exercises ( a definite yes) can be very beneficial. This person will need alot of encouragement. Good Luck. to you both
