A member asked:

What do you suggest if my son was stillborn and had twelve fingers twelve toes will i have another child with this?

Hard to say: The extra digits may or may not be associated with the stillbirth. They can arise as a simple dominant inherited family anomaly that may skip a generation. They can also be part of a syndrome with other life threatening defects.Syndromes can be sporadic or carry a 25-50% recurrence risk.

Probably not: If you're offered a chance for chromosomal studies and/or an autopsy, go for it. There's a good chance this is Patau's which doesn't recur that often. And please remember this -- the fact that Junior was otherwise well-formed tells the world that you can, indeed, have a healthy baby. May you find comfort in the weeks ahead.
