Autism is thought to: be a spectrum and a one end is Aspergers syndrome. Folks w/Aspergers can be very happy and fulfilled but may need some special support to get there. Many are fascinated by a very specific topic or field, e.g., cars, math, radios, computers, etc. Peace and good health.

Though many with a : prior diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome dislike it's being subsumed into the sole diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder in the DSM-IV, the change allows a more objective description of a person's functional challenges & capabilities for increased access to appropriate funding & services. It also emphasizes that the underlying core deficits are the same to varying degrees in all people with ASD.

The spectrum: Years ago, with push from educators, they put autism, Asperger syndrome and pervasive developmental delay under an umbrella of the "autism spectrum disorders".It allowed coordinated treatment funding for similar needs, but I consider it like putting appendicitis in an"abdominal pain spectrum" .They are separate issues with common needs and some overlap in features.Beyond that it's just words.
