It depends: It depends on the cause of the liver failure. If it is from alcohol, stopping the alcohol can sometimes allow the liver to improve. If the liver failure is from other causes, it is really variable how long it takes. There are scoring systems which can help predict the risk of dying - Childs score, MELD score. His doctor should be able to help you with these.
