Often: Splenectomy can often improve ITP, but there are always exceptions. You should also realize that once your spleen is removed, your body will have a more difficult time fighting bacterial infections caused by encapsulated bacteria like streptococcus pneumoniae. As with any surgery, you should carefully discuss all options with your doctor. Once your spleen is removed they can't put it back.
