Search for Cause: "splenomegaly" is always due to a primary process such as an underlying infection, liver disease, cancer, etc. While having an enlarged spleen can put one at slightly increased risk for trauma-related splenic injury, it is not an indication for splenectomy. The most critical issue is defining the cause: once that is treated, the spleen can return to normal size.
