Scar formation: The breast bone heals after being split by mediansternotomy by a combination of scar formation and fixation by wires or whatever is used in closure. For most patients the healing time is in the range of 4-8 weeks depending on age and other factors. We usually recommend at least 6 weeks before starting any major exercise or rigorous activity involving the arms or shoulders for this reason.
