See answer: Excessive salt (sodium) intake leads to fluid retention and its associated risks of high blood pressure and edema. Diuretics used to rid the body of the excess salt/water. Excessive salt intake not only defeats the purpose and effectiveness of a diuretic but also magnifies the loss of potassium, magnesium, and calcium which can cause significant adverse effects. Too little salt can dehydrate.
