Unfortunately, yes: It could be cancer, or something else. Either way, it sounds like a good reason to get eval. By doctor, discuss options for assistance with quitting, and making a quit date. Hopefully a thorough eval by your doctor will find nothing, but the scare can act as good motivation for continued abstinence after quitting. Call 911 if short of breath suddenly.
