"Medical food": Hi. Metanx contains the ACTIVATED forms of several B vitamins (folate, B6, B12). Data show that these "nutrients" augment healing & repair of nerves damaged by diabetic peripheral neuropathy, unlike the other drugs (like gabapentin, pregabalin, etc) that just attenuate the symptoms of painful neuropathy. I think Metanx is worth a try if you have painful neuropathy. Insurance doesn't cover it.

Prescription vitamin: Metanx is a prescription vitamin formulation used to treat diabetic neuropathy. It has very active and large doses of folic acid derivative, vitaminB12, and pyridoxine. It has not been rigorously double blind tested but is used. Side effects are drowsiness , fatigue, sense of full body swelling and diarrhea. Alternatives do exist and a doctor should be consulted before using.
