Neural foramen?: At 54 you could have some cervical arthritis with narrowing of a neural foramen (nerve exit from spine). Head turning can cause pinching. Need CT or MR scan and review by neurologist or neurosurgeon. Pay attention specifically to where the pain is, and any numbness. Tell doctor.

Pinched Nerve: Sounds like you have a pinched nerve in your neck. I would suggest seeing a pain/spine specialist to evaluate you further to evaluate what level and what can be done to treat you. There are interventional treatments besides medications and surgeries that might reduce or eliminate the pain altogether.
