Yes and yes.: EMG and NCV is the preferred test to diagnoses nerve problems of the brachial plexus. Complications from the test are unusual when done by experienced physicians. The test is done on the upper extremity and not on the brachial plexus directly. Rare complications can include bleeding, infection, nerve injury and electrical shock from malfunctioning equipment
