Yes both are safe and effective but both have adverse effects which may be an issue. Vistaril is not of value here, but your amitriptyline is an older drug which can be effective at appropriate dosing.

Sometimes one medicine is enough. I am not aware that vistaril would cause them to be more or less effective.
