Edema: Swelling of an extremity is called EDEMA. Most commonly this is due to excessive salt intake with water retention. Pressure for about 10 seconds with a thumb or forefinger in the edematous area will leave a depression (pit) → pitting edema. Those with a heart condition can have such a problem as a sign of heart failure. Uric acid problems (gout) usually is confined to redness/swelling of big toe.

Swelling alone?: Swelling alone without any pain would be more attributable to blood pressure problems. Deposition of uric acid in the joints (gout) would cause pain in addition to the swelling and usually only happens in 1 joint at a time.
