The training: Family practice (family medicine)- go through 3 years residency program after medical school, training in different fields/specialties, hands on in hospitals and clinics. General practice- starting to practice general medicine after graduating from medical school ( this is usually the older generation of doctors).

Board certification: A general practice doctor is a physician who practices general medicine. Family practice requires three years of specialty training including pediatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics, and psychiatry along with other types of medicine and physicians must pass a board certification test, keep current on education requirements and pass frequent recertification tests.

Pretty similar: Both general practice doctors and family practice doctors see the same types of patients. Individual physicians may vary in practice guidelines, but many practices will see children, adults, obstetric patients, and perform some procedures.

Length of training: Generally, the difference would be length of training program. A family practice physician takes a 3 year residency that includes internal medicine, ob-gyn, surgery, emergency medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, neurology, and of course family medicine as well as elective subspecialty rotations. A general practice physician can get his or her license after a 1 year, usually rotating, internship.
