In the early 70's: Er's were staffed by doctors in training usually supervised by an on-call attending. The concept of a separate discipline, separate board and life's committment to this began in the early to mid 70's. It is a recognized medical specialty.

The start of EM: The first emergency medicine (em) residency program started in 1970 at the university of cincinnati. It was not until 1979, however, that the american board of medical specialties voted to recognize em as its own a medical specialty with its own board examination.
