A member asked:

I'm an american working/living in spain & had open inguinal hernia surgery 6/30.i have ??s abt post-op severe pain/numbness in my thigh.surgeon here says it's standard to cut nerves, is that true?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Very common: Very common to cut some sensory nerves. Modern experience/data suggest it is worse to dissect and preserve the nerves. Nerves are cut IF they are in the way of the sutures and mesh. It is best to "bury" the nerve ends into the muscle with absorbable suture. These are some ?'s you could ask about. Pain should be improving at 2 weeks. Hope this helps!
