T1 or T2 sequence ?: Lesions of optic nerve include infarcts, gliomas, demyelination ( Neuromyelitis Optica, MS, optic neuritis), trauma, infection, degenerative condition, etc. It would be helpful to know more about the MRI. Is there a mass effect, does it contrast enhance, and is it bright on the T2, Ti or FLAIR sequences? The ophthalmologist (MD) is usually consulted but may ask for the opinion of a neurologist.
