what are the best anti-anxiety medications?

Dr. James Cunnar
Family Medicine 27 years experience
SSRIs: Ssri stands for "selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor", this class of medicine includes prozac, zoloft, paxil, (paroxetine) and lexapro, to name a few. These medicines are meant to be taken daily, to prevent anxiety. To abort anxiety attacks, benzodiazepines are very effective (medicines like xanax, Valium or klonopin).
Dr. Vikas Duvvuri
Psychiatry 16 years experience
& psychotherapy...: As dr. Cunnar describes, medications can reverse symptoms of an anxiety disorder. Psychotherapy can often capitalize on a calmer brain to make lasting improvements in coping skills.

Where should I seek help for social anxiety disorder?

Dr. Robert Stewart

Call psychologists: Or other mental health professionals and ask if they have training and experience treating social anxiety. The treatment that has proven most effective is relaxation training coupled with cognitive therapy that includes gradual exposure in imagination and real life. Since counseling is a very personal undertaking, find someone who feels comfortable to you.

What is the best method to find basal body temperature?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. Neeoo Chin
Fertility Medicine 40 years experience
Not accurate: As you first wake up place a basal body thermometer underneath your tongue for approximately 3 minutes. A digital thermometer is easier and more convenient. Unfortunately basal body temperature taking is very confusing. Any type of movement or any type of activity prior to awakening in taking the temperature will falsely elevated the temperature. Also when the temperature has risen approximately .6 to 1° ovulation has already occurred.

When must I get professional help for my child if he has stranger anxiety?

Dr. Robert Stewart
Clinical Psychology 44 years experience
When it's a problem.: Some anxiety (shyness) with strangers is normal and good. You want your child to be cautious with strangers. Honor the child's discomfort with anyone being too intimate. But if the anxiety is causing problems or distress in the child's life, talk to a professional as soon as possible to help decide what needs to be done. The sooner the issue is addressed, the easier it is to resolve.

Dr. Shontae Buffington

Leave them alone: The best thing to do is to leave them alone. Try to get rid of the offending agent, heat, over bundling; consider an office visit if baby's skin does not improve. It may be eczema or another common childhood rash.

I obsessivly pick sores on my hands and scalp, why can't I stop even though it hurts? Is it anxiety or something else?

2 doctor answers6 doctors weighed in
Dr. John Hsiao
Psychiatry 40 years experience
Something else: If it 's not irritation (itching) then you probably have dermatillomania, which is just a fancy way of saying you obsessively pick at yourself. This is thought to be related to obsessive-compulsive disorder & may improve on an ssri antidepressant. Cognitive-behavioral therapy might also help. You could also try wearing a hat & gloves (kidding). Anxiety makes it worse.
