There are neurological causes (nerve weakness, etc.), structural causes (masses/polyps/nodules/scarring), allergic causes, reflux, as well as other causes that can affect your voice. Treatment include voice therapy, local medication, injections, and surgery. And side effects really depend on the treatment.
