A member asked:

On average, how long are space maintainers needed?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Space maintainers: I am assuming you referring to time. Normal spacers are placed in children to hold the space due to the early loss of a baby tooth. These can be removed once the permanent tooth begins to erupt or orthodontics begin. We do use space maintainers in adults following an extraction to keep teeth in proper position until implant, bridge or partial finished. This could be several months.
