Consider This: Spitting up blood can indicate several things, some serious and some not-so-serious. GERD (acid reflux into the esophagus) or strenuous coughing can cause blood in sputum. Personal history that would raise concern for more serious problems include smoking and heavy alcohol use. For GERD, you could try OTC Mylanta to coat your throat and neutralize stomach acid. If blood continues, see a physician.
