Alzheimer's: THe diarrhea is not directly related to the alzheimer's, however, dietary changes, alterations in bowel habits, perhaps not using the toilet when the body signals a need, may be contributing factors. Sometimes constipation can lead to fecal impaction and stool leakage ,which could be mistaken for 'diarrhea.' Make sure your dad stays hydrated and speak with his provider.

Unclear :( see MD: Alzheimer's dementia, a dementia that typically occurs in the elderly, is often treated with Aricept (donepezil), which can cause diarrhea as a side effect. Loss of bowel control may be a late stage primary effect of Alzheimer's, as opposed to a med side effect. Or, it may be a 3rd problem. Diarrhea in an elderly pt cannot go without evaluation & tx. Call MD ASAP and get dad examined & treated.
