Esophageal spasms: Gastroesophageal reflux causes spasm of the esophagus because of the inflammation of the esophagus. The pain is usually worsened when swallowing a bolus of solids such as meat. First, you need to be on a acid blocker such as nexium (esomeprazole). Elevate the head of the bed, avoid, alcohol, coffee tea fatty foods peppermint or licorice. Don't eat late. You may need a secondary med such as sucralfate.
