Irregular bleeding: Some women after Mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD insertion will have irregular bleeding and spotting that eventually stops in 2 to 3 months and then will have decreased bleeding or no bleeding at all the rest of the 5 years. Patience is all that is necessary. Some women will have minimal cramping for a few days to a month. The risk of spontaneous expulsion and perforation is very low, less than 1%. Ideal contraceptive
