Several causes: Dehydration, high altitude, anything that stimulates bone marrow to produce more red cells, heart problems and chronic lung problems ( again the mechanism of last two is the same-- HYPOXIA stimulates red cell production

Many...: A high hematocrit can be caused by: dehydration, congenital heart disease, overproduction of red blood cells, cor pulmonale (from COPD, sleep apnea, pulmonary embolism), high altitude, smoking, pulmonary fibrosis. Talk to the doctor who ordered the test if you are concerned about your specific results.
