A member asked:

Why would a dr. prescribe tegretol for mood swings when their are so many new antipsychotics available. i am also a well controlled type 2 diabetic.

Ask prescribing Dr: This is a good question to ask the doctor who prescribed the drug. Newer drugs aren't always better than older ones. Most of the newer antipsychotics will make diabetes control harder. Anticonvulsants like Tegretol are often used to help stabilize mood in less severe cases.

Tegretol: Is a good mood stabilizer and is tried and true. The newer meds you refer to are not mood stabiliErs.
