By testing: There are no "typical" symptoms of cancer. Weight loss, mass, pain, fever, etc., may be seen in cancers, but also in other conditions. The only way to know for sure is testing, usually by biopsy, microscopic examination of suspected tissues, sometimes by X-ray, sometimes by blood tests. Obviously the physician must consider the situation and the patient risk factors.
