Physical exam: If you injured your nail bed, you will notice one or more of the following: persistent pain and/or throbbing, swelling of the injured digit and blood or discoloration under the nail. Excess blood can be removed by a health care provider which can alleviate pain. If the nail becomes loose and/or falls out, a new finger nail regrows in 3 months. A toenail can take 6 months.
