Chronic inflammation: The lining to the sinuses is specialized to produce mucous. There are also microscopic "hair cells" called cilia that move the mucous to the sinus opening so it can drain. Chronic sinusitis is injury to the sinus lining (repeat infections or one long one) that damages the sinuses ability to do what it normally does. This promotes infection and blockage. Pain and stuffiness result.

Greater than 90 days: The actual definition of chronic sinusitis is that it last for more than 90 days. If the classical symptoms of sinusitis last for more than this period of time, you must seek advice from an ENT doctor.

Chronic Sinusitis: Chronic sinusitis is "inflammation" of the sinus linings for 3 months or longer. Infection can be present, but chronic sinusitis can also be swelling in the absence of infection. Many causes may contribute to chronic sinusitis, including environmental exposures, allergies, recurrent infections, and a person's own bodily function (i.e, immune system, genetics, anatomy, etc.)
