NOT DIRECTLY: Flecainide is used to treat abnormal heart rhythms that originate in the atrium. A PFO and correction of a PFO can affect cardiac conduction resulting in abnormal heart rhythms that can be treated with flecainide. Flecainide does not cause the PFO, it treats the consequences of the PFO

Congenital defect: No. It is a congenital defect which means that you were born with it. PFO is present in about 25% of people and most of the time does not cause any problems.

Patent foramen ovale: This is usually a defect you are born with, sometimes it does not show up until later in life when patient has a stroke or other problem. It would not be caused by flecainide.
