Common issue: Sometimes protecting the skin with regular application of petroleum jelly can prevent the skin breakdown.Rarely the area becomes infected and would need a topical antibiotic lotion.

Very common: This is a very common problem in infants and toddlers. Drooling can cause irritation and dryness to the skin. Petroleum jelly can help protect the skin around the mouth. If you've started solids yet, some foods, especially those with citric acid such as tomato products, pineapple, berries, oranges can also cause irritation around the mouth.
